If being a jack-of-all-trades is a trade itself, then Kirby Adams is attempting to master it. After studying biology at Northland College in Ashland, Wisconsin during the early 90's, he spent much of the next two decades involved at numerous levels of the ornamental fish industry, including time spent as a salesman, manager, store owner, and consultant. Among his passions during this period was inland coral farming, producing captive propagated live corals for the marine aquarium hobby. Kirby has written several articles (example) for marine aquarium publications and has spoken about a wide variety of aquarium and coral reef science topics to clubs, conferences, and college classes.

During these years, Kirby traveled extensively in North America studying the natural history of the continent. Now retired from the ornamental fish industry, he intends to spend his "second forty years" promoting the appreciation of nature to those who for one reason or another have not been exposed to all its wonders. The need for children to get unplugged and out in the woods is a particular focus of his writing. He has contributed to the travel blog National Parks Traveler, and records his adventures in nature with his wife Sarah at their blog Sharp Tern. Kirby and Sarah also share documentary photos of their many excursions as the Adventures of Kirby and Sarah at Flickr. Birdwatching has become a recent obsession for Kirby and he sees this as a particularly effective gateway to get people out of the house and enjoying the natural world.

Since a true jack-of-all-trades wouldn't be just an aquarist and naturalist, Kirby also enjoys finance and investing, and has contributed investment analysis to the Motley Fool. He says it isn't an accident that economics and ecology share many of the same themes and terminology, pointing out that after an understanding of how an ecosystem works, understanding the economic system isn't that much of a stretch.

Kirby lives in Lansing, Michigan with his wife Sarah (a registered nurse) and their three Russian Tortoises.
